As a lifelong teacher of all ages and many subjects, I have a passion for engaging with public schools, and love working with classrooms as a visiting author! I enjoy every opportunity to work with schools to bring reading, writing, and poetry into their students’ lives in a fun and engaging way. I’m happy to coordinate with teachers to create a tailored presentation to meet the needs of your class curriculum!

At the moment, all non-local classroom visits are virtual, and coordinated through the school’s preferred video conferencing platform.

Presentations

  • Poetry – During this visit, students learn the characteristics of poetry which make it different from prose, explore a variety of poems by great authors, and put their own creativity to use with some quick-write poetry prompts!
  • How Do Authors Get Ideas? – Ideas are everywhere! You just need to know where to find them. During this visit, students will learn five key places authors look for ideas, and practice finding some of their own.
  • The Path to Perfection – I have an idea … now what? This presentation shows students the steps authors take to turn their writing from ideas into finished stories, with real life examples.
  • Combination – This presentation takes all the things I’m most passionate about in the presentations above and rolls them into the ultimate overview of being an author and poet: the unique characteristics of poetry, coming up with inspiring ideas, and finally taking those ideas from draft to done! This presentation leaves no stone left unturned, and includes time for students to create their own quick-write poetry as well!
  • God Made Seasons – Designed for Christian preschools, this presentation focuses on fun – I’ll bring a guitar and teach the kids an interactive song celebrating God’s goodness in nature, and we’ll discuss different ways the seasons show us the character of God. Ages 2-5
  • God’s Armor for Me – Designed for Christian preschools and early elementary schools (K-2), this presentation is best for individual classes where students have time to share during discussion, and engage with writer’s workshop style activities. We’ll read about and discuss God’s “armor”, then shift into what it’s like to be an author, focusing on where writers find ideas. Kids will all get a chance to create their own collaborative story, and leave the session with their own brainstorm of ideas to start writing their own stories!
